Time flies, and I recently discovered that my DJ equipment had become a collection of vintage treasures. For analog equipment, it's no big deal. For digital equipment that needs drivers, security updates, and use proprietary protocols, it's a problem.

Today, I released my new track "Close of Day". This is an instrumental electronica beat heavily influenced by West Coast hip hop. During the 90s, I discovered and listened to a lot of different styles of music. This included hip-hop, and I used to listen to Norway's National Rap Show every Friday night. This was the time of the East Coast–West Coast hip hop rivalry. I didn't pay that much attention, though: I cared about the music and the beats. And I learned to like the distinctive sounds of both the typical New York style beats (which I tried to capture somewhat in my track "Interjection"), as well as the style of the West Coast or the Southern beats, which often had more synthesizers involved in the production.

"Interjection" is a venture into chill beats. Sonically, it draws inspiration from 90s New York hip-hop, 80s jazz-funk, as well as arctic electronica. It is made to be chill, repetitive, and background friendly, yet interesting to listen to, and contains lots of details.

Check out these great videos of Mike Dean visiting the Moog Factory. Dean is a record producer and a multi-instrumentalist, and he played classical piano for 18 years before getting into Hip-Hop as a grown up. He is known for having pioneered the Dirty South sound in the 90s.

I've just finished building a small network audio player. It allows me to stream music over the internet to my stereo, without plugging in my computer or phone. I can control the music from Spotify (using Spotify Connect), from a web page or from an app. The box is based on a tiny Raspberry Pi computer running Volumio.

I started DJ'ing at age 11\. At first, I was drawn to it by the equipment and the blinking lights. It was fascinating! Later, I got into the technicalities of mixing and scratching, and took that far. But I also enjoy just blending different styles of music, without thinking much about the technical stuff. I had fun doing mixtapes on cassette before I got turntables, and the focus then was on the music. Unlikely and unexpected matches that worked out well were fun, and still is.

Over time, I'm going to post some videos from live performances by various artists that I find amazing. First out is a band that I got recommended by a friend not so long ago: Snarky Puppy. They're an instrumental jazz ensemble with a huge and changing line up, originating from Denton, Texas.

In my home studio, I have three sets of monitors (speakers), plus headphones. So I needed a controller to easily switch between them. However, I use Sonarworks to calibrate the sound of my main monitors (and my headphones). So a regular monitor controller that routes the audio signal (from one input) to the chosen speakers would not work well: I would then have to switch on and off calibration (as well as changing calibration profiles) when switching between different speakers and the headset.

About a year ago I rebuilt my combined music room and home studio. My plan was to add a little acoustic treatment in addition to what I already had. Then, it escalated a bit and ended up to be a lot more work than I had foreseen...
